My Educational Journey
Everyone has a story to tell. One of the strategies that I use to engage students, teachers, graduate students, parents, and other stakeholders, is to tell my Educational Journey. Educational Journeys were inspired by my colleague Dr. Tara Brown at the University of Maryland. After using these Educational Journeys for nearly 10 years now, I have come to understand that in many ways, our stories are the curriculum, getting others to tell their stories is the pedagogy, and learning from one another is transformation.
Educational Journeys provide people with opportunities to share their educational story. Some people focus on formative moments; others focus on moments of struggle and triumph. My journey is connected to key moments along my pathway--attending public schools in Southern California, dealing with the challenges of middle school, realizing I was underprepared late in high school, my awakening in community college, transferring to and thriving in a four-year college, and eventually landing at Harvard for graduate school. My journey is still a work in progress but I tell my story with the hopes of encouraging students, teachers, and others to do the same.
